## For parents
A Diwali story for kids aged 3 to 4: Mira paints a clay diya for everyone in her family, then secretly paints one with marigolds, just for Nani.

## The story text
Nani set a basket on the mat. Inside were five little clay diyas, plain and brown. "These are for Diwali," said Nani. Mira peeked in. "But they're so plain!" Nani smiled and opened a box of paints. "Not for long." Mira dipped her brush in orange. Swish, swish, all the way around. "Only the outside," said Nani. "The little bowl inside stays clay, for the oil." Then Mira added white dots. Dot, dot, dot! "This one is for Mumma." Green stripes for Papa, like his best kurta. Tiny yellow dots for baby Ved, round as his toes. Pink with a big yellow sun for Mira. "Mumma, Papa, Ved, me," Mira counted. Four bright diyas. But one plain diya was still in the basket. Mira looked at Nani's sari, all cream with orange marigolds. She had an idea. "Nani, close your eyes! No peeking!" Nani covered her eyes with both hands. Mira painted slowly and carefully. Cream all around. Then orange flowers, round and ruffly, one, two, three, four. Mira lined up all five diyas on the sunny wall. "Can we light them now?" "Not yet," said Nani. "The paint has to dry in the sun first." "Dry yet?" Mira asked after lunch. "Not yet." "Dry yet?" she asked after her nap. Nani touched one gently, with one finger. "Now they are." That evening, Papa poured a little oil into each diya. Lighting diyas is a grown-up job, so Mira watched from Mumma's lap, a few steps back. One by one, Nani lit them. Orange, green, yellow, pink… and then she stopped at the last one. "Marigolds," Nani whispered. "Like my sari." "It's yours, Nani," said Mira. "Happy Diwali!" Nani hugged her close, and five painted diyas glowed by the door.
