Story

One morning, a little rabbit named Bea heard music coming from the sea. Twinkly music. Spinning music. The kind that makes your feet go tap-tap-tap.

Bea looked out. She saw balloons. Pink ones and yellow ones, bobbing over the waves. She looked closer. She saw tiny lights. She looked even closer. And there, moving slowly, slowly, slowly across the water, was the biggest turtle in the whole wide world. And on his great green shell? A carnival! A real one! With a spinning wheel, and a popcorn cart, and a little train that went chugga-chugga-chugga in a circle. Animals were laughing and waving from every ride. "Can you hear the music?" Bea whispered. Maybe you can too.

The path crossed the blue chair, the moonlit rug, and a little basket by the window.

The turtle's name was Gondo, and here was the thing about Gondo: he only stopped for someone who waved with both hands. Bea waved with one hand. Nothing. She waved with two hands, big and wide, and Gondo smiled his slow turtle smile and turned toward shore. He was so gentle when he arrived that not one balloon blew away. Bea rode the spinning wheel. She ate the popcorn. She patted Gondo's warm shell and said, "Thank you." Gondo blinked his big golden eye. Then soft as a sigh he turned back toward the sea, the little train going chugga-chugga-chugga, the balloons bobbing pink and yellow, the music growing smaller and smaller until it was just the tiniest twinkle on the wind. Bea's feet went tap-tap-tap all the way home.

Then came the gentle surprise: the little sound was making a tiny path for a friend.

The little friend helped right away, tucked the tiny clue into a cozy spot, and smiled.
