Story

Maisie was eating her toast when she heard a sound like the biggest, softest drum in the world. Boom. Boom. Boom. It shook the jam jar just a little.

She ran to the window and looked up. A parade was going past — but not on the street. It was up in the sky, just above the rooftops, drifting slow as a cloud. There was a marching band of fat little clouds shaped like tubas. There were ribbons of pink wind curling between the chimneys. And there were footprints — big round footprints — pressed gently into the sky, one after another, leading all the way to the left. "Something very big came this way," said Maisie quietly. "Something very, very big."

Tip-tap, soft and small. Tip-tap, home we go.

She pressed her nose to the glass. First clue: the footprints were round as dinner plates. Second clue: the ribbons of wind smelled like the sea, salty and cool, even though the sea was far, far away. Maisie thought. She thought and thought. She grabbed her yellow blanket — she always thought better with her yellow blanket — and suddenly she knew. Only one thing made round footprints and smelled like the sea and was bigger than anything. A whale. A sky whale. And it had walked right over her house while she was eating toast. "Oh no," she said, because the footprints were all going one way. The whale was walking away. It must have lost the parade.

Maisie opened the window and called out, as loud as she could, "This way! The parade went this way!" She pointed right, where the cloud tubas were still bobbing along. For a moment everything was still. Then, slowly, the footprints started coming back. Boom. Boom. Boom. A great dark blue shadow slid over the garden and for just one second Maisie saw it — round and enormous and gentle, turning slowly in the sky to follow the sound of the drums. It made a low, rumbling sound that felt like a hug you could hear.

Then the parade moved on, rolling away over the far rooftops, growing quieter and quieter. Maisie stood at the window with her yellow blanket for a long time. And just before it was all gone, she heard it one more time — soft and far away — boom, boom, boom. She smiled and went back to finish her toast. The sound was back where it belonged.
