A storybook, performed

The narrator reads the book’s own words, page by page, and everything on screen follows the story.

  • Page one of The Map: Meera kneels by her map, with “Meera was a little girl with sparkly eyes” low on the screen and “sparkly” in gold.Every word, read aloud A storyteller voice reads every word of the storybook, page by page. It never adds a word, skips one or changes one.
  • The wise old owl on its branch above Meera, with “Hoo goes there?” asked the owl.A voice for every character The owl sounds wise and old, a goodnight is whispered, and every quote is read the way its character would say it.
  • Meera on the rope bridge with “I can do this,” she whispered, and “whispered” in gold.Words that light up Each line sits low on the screen and every word turns gold as it is read, so early readers can follow along, even with the sound off.
  • The giant asleep in the cave as HOOONK-SHHHH! pops up over the picture.Sounds you can see Clunk! Creak, creak, wobble, wobble! Sound words pop up as they are read, and the story’s own sounds play in the pauses.
  • The camera on a pale morning moon above the hills at “where a faint white circle was still hanging.”The camera reads along It finds the owl when the owl speaks and the pale moon at “a faint white circle”, with slow, gentle moves.
  • Meera holds up the silver lantern on the hilltop as “whoosh!” pops up and it lights.Music under every page A gentle storybook score plays softly under the voice, from the first page to “The End”.

The Map, word for word

A made-up story about Meera, a treasure map and a lantern: 10 pages, 594 words and 5 minutes 29 seconds of video. These are the exact words the narrator reads.

  1. Page 1: Clunk!

Meera was a little girl with sparkly eyes and an even bigger imagination. One sunny morning, while digging in the garden, her shovel hit something hard. Clunk! It was a tiny wooden box. Inside was a folded, crinkly map with a big red star on it and three words: "Find the Lantern." "A treasure map!" gasped Meera. She stuffed the map in her backpack, added an apple, and off she went.

  2. Page 2: One Step, Then Another

The first stop on the map was a deep, rushing river. Across it hung a rickety rope bridge. Creak, creak, wobble, wobble! Meera's tummy felt fluttery. "I can do this," she whispered. "One step. Then another step." She held the ropes tight and tiptoed across. Creak, creak, wobble, wobble! At last her feet touched solid ground. "I did it!" cheered Meera.

  3. Page 3: Tip, Tip, Tip

The second stop was a dark, echoey cave. Inside, something enormous was snoring. HOOONK-SHHHH! HOOONK-SHHHH! It was a giant! He was curled up like a hill, fast asleep, and right behind him glowed a little door. Meera tiptoed on her tippiest toes. Tip, tip, tip. Then her nose began to tickle. Her eyes crinkled up. "Ah... ah... ah..." Meera squeezed her nose shut and held her breath until the tickle went away. She slipped past the giant and through the little door.

  4. Page 4: Hoo Goes There?

Outside, a wise old owl sat on a branch, blinking big round eyes. "Hoo goes there?" asked the owl. "To find the Lantern, you must answer my riddle." Meera sat up straight. "I have no wings, but I fly across the sky at night. I'm round and bright, and I like to follow you home. What am I?" Meera thought and thought. She looked up at the pale morning sky, where a faint white circle was still hanging. "The moon!" she shouted. "Hoo-ray! Correct!" hooted the owl, and he pointed his wing toward a hilltop. "The Lantern is up there."

  5. Page 5: I Can Do This Too

The hill was steep and rocky. Meera climbed and climbed. Her legs got tired and her hands got dusty. "Maybe I should go home," she sighed. Then she remembered the bridge. She remembered the giant. She remembered the riddle. "I did those things," said Meera. "I can do this too!" Step by step, she climbed to the very top.

  6. Page 6: Whoosh!

There, on a smooth flat stone, sat a small silver lantern. Meera lifted it up, and whoosh! it lit with a warm golden glow. Inside, tiny sparkles danced like friendly fireflies. A note was tied to the handle. It said: "This lantern shines for anyone who is brave, kind, and keeps trying." Meera smiled. She didn't find gold or jewels. She found something even better: she found out how brave she really was.

  7. Page 7: Lighting Up the Night

That evening, Meera carried her glowing lantern all the way home. She hung it by her bedroom window, where it lit up the night. And she dreamed of her next adventure.

  8. Page 8: A Meadow in Her Dream

That night, Meera dreamed she was walking through a moonlit meadow. The silver lantern glowed in her hand. Tall grass swayed softly, and tiny flowers shone like stars. A little moth fluttered nearby, looking for a place to rest.

  9. Page 9: A Soft Little Glow

Meera held the lantern low. Its golden light made a cozy spot among the flowers. The moth settled on a leaf and folded its wings. "Good night, little moth," whispered Meera. The lantern sparkled, and the meadow seemed to smile.

  10. Page 10: Home in the Morning

Soon the dream meadow grew hazy and bright. Meera was back in bed, snug under her patchwork quilt. Morning sunlight slipped through the window. Her lantern glimmered softly, and Meera smiled at the thought of another kind adventure.
