Story

At bedtime, a tiny tap made everyone wonder. At bedtime, a tiny tap made everyone wonder. Bella the bunny had a ball. Not just any ball — a shiny, round, perfectly red ball that went boing boing boing across the bright green forest floor.

Every morning, Bella took her red ball to the big oak tree and bounced it. Boing! It hit a root. Boing! It hit a pebble. Boing! It came right back to her paws. Bella loved that ball more than acorn muffins. More than muddy puddles. More than almost anything.

Tip-tap, soft and small. Tip-tap, home we go.

One sunny morning, Squirrel skipped over. "Can I play too, Bella?" Then Fox trotted up with a big hopeful grin. Then slow, steady Turtle arrived, already a little out of breath from hurrying. Bella looked at Squirrel. She looked at Fox. She looked at Turtle. Then she pulled the red ball tight against her tummy and said, "Mine." Squirrel's tail drooped. Fox's ears went flat. Turtle just blinked slowly and turned around. And one by one, they walked away.

So Bella bounced her ball. Boing. She chased it. Boing. She caught it. Boing. But the forest felt very, very quiet. No laughing. No running. No one to say, "Whoa, nice catch, Bella!" The ball went boing — and somehow that didn't sound as fun anymore.

That's when Old Owl landed on the oak tree with a soft whump of wings. She didn't say much. She just tilted her round head and said, "Bella. How many smiles is that ball making right now?" Bella counted. One. Just hers. And it was a pretty small smile at that. Owl blinked slowly. "A ball like that," she said, "looks like it could hold about four smiles. Maybe more." Then Owl fluffed her feathers and said nothing else.

Bella looked at the red ball. She looked down the path where her friends had gone. She took a big bunny breath — and she rolled that ball as hard as she could toward Squirrel.

Squirrel gasped. Fox barked a happy little bark. Turtle smiled the slowest, warmest smile you ever saw. And then they all ran, and chased, and laughed so loud the leaves shook.

The ball went boing to Squirrel, boing to Fox, boing to Turtle, boing back to Bella — and every single boing had a giggle attached to it now.

That night, Bella tucked her red ball beside her pillow. She counted the smiles from today. She ran out of toes to count on. That, she thought, was exactly the right number.

Then came the gentle surprise: the little sound was making a tiny path for a friend.

The little friend helped right away, tucked the tiny clue into a cozy spot, and smiled. At last, everything felt warm and close. Softly, softly, home we go. The tap was back where it belonged.
