Story

Grandma and the Bouncy Vada

Grandma's kitchen was warm and busy. A big yellow pan sat on the stove, and the oil inside it went shh-shh, shh-shh, bubbling away happily. Grandma rolled the dough into a soft little ring, pressed a tiny hole right in the middle, and dropped it gently into the oil — tup! And that was when the magic happened. This was no ordinary vada. This was a Bouncy Vada! The moment it turned golden brown and came out of the pan, it didn't sit still on the plate. Oh no. It went tup-tup-BOING and started jumping! Kanna was watching from the kitchen doorway, eyes wide as saucers. "Grandma! The vada is jumping!" he shouted. Grandma laughed her big warm laugh. "Yes, my Kanna! This is our special Bouncy Vada. I think it wants to see the whole house!"

So off it rolled — round and round like a little golden wheel — all the way into the hall. It bounced right up onto the sofa, landed with a pud on a soft cushion, then rolled again into the bedroom. There it found Kanna's red toy truck and hopped right on for a ride! Kanna and Grandma ran after it, clapping their hands and calling out tup-tup-BOING, tup-tup-BOING! The little vada was having the best time. It rolled all the way to the garden door, peeked at the green parrot hanging in the window — hello, little parrot! — and then bounced right back to the kitchen, cheerful as ever. Grandma lifted a second golden vada out of the pan and winked at Kanna. "Look at this one. Just as naughty as you!"

Now, Grandma knew a special rule about the Bouncy Vada. It had to go around the whole house once before it would taste its very best. So off went the vada — straight to Kanna's little table in the corner. Kanna tiptoed up and reached out his hand to grab it, but — BOING! — it leapt away and tucked itself lightly inside Grandma's woven cradle, hiding under a soft edge of cloth. "Where did it go? Where did it go?" Kanna called, looking everywhere. Then — sniff, sniff — something warm and wonderful drifted into his nose. Crispy. Nutty. Delicious. Kanna peeked into the cradle. There was the vada, curled up and resting, perfectly content. "It got tired, Kanna," Grandma said softly. "It just needed a little rest."

Kanna scooped up the vada very, very gently and carried it back to the kitchen in both his small hands. Grandma had a little white cup waiting on the table, filled with cool, thick coconut chutney. "Every Bouncy Vada loves a swim," Grandma said with a smile, and she dipped the golden vada — sploosh — right into the white chutney pool. The vada settled in, still and happy, not bouncing at all now. It was ready.

Kanna took one small bite. His eyes went round. "Grandma," he said, "why does it taste so, so good?" Grandma pulled him close in a warm hug, and he could smell the oil and the spices and the chutney all at once. "Do you know the secret ingredient?" she whispered. Kanna shook his head. "It's your giggle," said Grandma. "Every time you laughed and chased that silly vada, you put a little bit of happiness right inside it." Kanna giggled again — he couldn't help it. And together, Grandma and Kanna shared every last bit of the yummy Bouncy Vada, and went to sleep that night with full, happy tummies.
