Inside this storybook

My name is Kai. Today I am going on a plane for the first time. Many children feel a little nervous before their first flight. It is okay to feel that way.

First, we go to a counter. My grown-up shows our tickets. Our big bag rides away on a moving belt. We will usually see it again after the flight.

Next, we walk through security. I put my backpack in a gray tray. The security officer helps everyone. I walk through a tall doorway, one step at a time.

Then we wait at the gate. Big windows show the planes outside. I can see our plane. It is white with a blue tail.

Now we walk onto the plane. I find my blue seat by the window. The flight attendant shows us how to click our seatbelts. Click! My belt is snug.

The engines get loud, and the plane goes faster and faster. Then it lifts up into the sky. Sometimes my ears feel full or funny. I can try to swallow or take a sip of water. My grown-up holds my hand.

Up high, the clouds look like soft white fields. Most of the flight is calm and quiet. The flight attendant brings drinks and snacks. I can look, read, or rest.

Later, the plane comes down gently. The wheels touch the ground with a bump. We get our big bag from the belt. I flew on a plane, and now I know what happens.
